Proposed Bill Could Mean Good News for Logging Industry →

Good news for logging and trucking businesses that hire U.S. residents—Maine lawmakers might soon offer tax credits to these companies, Woodworking Network reported. Senate Leader Troy Jackson is sponsoring a concept bill, set to be voted on Feb. 20, that would provide tax credits to companies hiring Maine residents, in particular. Jackson himself is a fifth-generation logger who said that these types of jobs are more necessary than ever since the state lost five pulp and paper mills within the last four years, WABI reported.  Click for more...


World's Tallest Timber Skyscraper Coming to Tokyo →

The world's tallest wooden skyscraper is coming to Japan. Japan-based Sumitomo Forestry will create the structure, named W350, with 90 percent wood and 10 percent steel, the South China Morning Post reported. The structure will rise 350 meters, much taller than the world's current highest timber building, which stretches just 53 meters high. According to the company, its goal is to create cities that are environmentally conscious and use timber, allowing them to "become forests through increased use of wooden architecture for high-rise buildings." Sumitomo created the concept of W350 at the Tsukuba Research Institute, its research and development facility, the South China Morning Post reported.  Click for more...


Sennebogen Removes Wood-Handling Bottleneck for Harry Freeman and Son →

"The decision for our second Sennebogen was a lot simpler than the first," Steven Freeman said, recalling the trials and deliberations that led his family to purchase a Sennebogen 830 M‑T log-handler four years ago. "Our yard is tough: it's rock, and wood debris, and some mud, and the stud yard is up the hill, 300 to 400 yards from the mill. It's a cruel environment for a machine." Komatsu to Acquire Quadco, Southstar Operations →

On Jan. 26, Komatsu Ltd. signed an agreement to acquire from Prenbec Equipment Inc., a company based in Quebec, Canada, the Quadco and Southstar forestry attachment operations, excluding the forestry equipment businesses of Tanguay and Forespro delimbers. The acquisition will be made through a wholly owned subsidiary of Komatsu in the U.S. and is expected to close in February 2018, subject to completion of the closing conditions.  Click for more...
